Pet & Kid Safety During Tile Removal: A DFW Homeowner's Guide

The two questions we hear most from DFW families before a tile job: "Can the kids stay in the house?" and "What about the dogs?" The honest answer depends on the size of the job, the layout of your home, and how sensitive anyone in the household is to noise and dust. Here's how we think about it, and what you can plan for.

Why tile removal is different from most remodel work

Chipping tile off a slab creates three things kids and pets react to: fine silica dust, loud percussive noise, and unfamiliar people moving heavy equipment through the house. Dust-controlled removal handles the first problem well, but noise and disruption still need a plan.

How containment protects the rest of your home

• Zip-wall plastic barriers seal off the work area from living spaces, bedrooms, and the HVAC returns nearest the demo zone.
• HEPA vacuums at the tool capture dust at the point of chipping, before it becomes airborne.
• Negative air machines pull air out of the work zone so any escaped dust flows away from the rest of the house, not into it.
• HVAC handling — we cover returns and, on larger jobs, ask you to keep the system off in the work zone so dust isn't distributed through the ducts.

Done right, the rooms outside the barrier stay clean enough that non-sensitive household members can go about their day.

Kids: what to plan for

• Small jobs (a bathroom or entryway): most families stay home. Set up a "quiet zone" on the opposite side of the house and plan an out-of-the-house activity during the loudest 2–3 hours.
• Medium jobs (kitchen or great room): plan for the kids to be out during work hours. Noise carries, and the main living area is usually the demo zone.
• Whole-home removal: most families with young kids stay elsewhere for the removal days. There's no comfortable indoor space while the whole slab is being worked.
• Nap schedules and infants: tell us up front. We can sequence the loudest tool work around a nap window when it's realistic.

Pets: what to plan for

• Dogs react most to the noise and the strangers. Board them, send them to daycare, or set them up in a room on the far side of the house with the door closed and white noise on.
• Cats tend to hide. Confine them to a closed bedroom with litter, water, and food before the crew arrives — otherwise they'll bolt when the front door opens for equipment.
• Birds and small mammals are the most sensitive to airborne particulate and stress. Move cages to a friend's house or the far side of the home with the door closed for the duration of the job.
• Fish tanks should have air pumps checked and, if the tank is in or near the work zone, the top covered to reduce dust settling on the surface.

Asthma, allergies, and sensitive lungs

If anyone in the home has asthma, COPD, is pregnant, or is undergoing treatment that affects the lungs, we treat that as a plan-to-leave situation for at least the chipping phase. Dust-controlled removal captures the vast majority of silica at the tool, but "vast majority" is not "zero," and there is no reason for a sensitive person to be in the home while chipping is active.

The demo-day checklist we send DFW families

• Move small pets and cages out of the home or to a sealed room on the far side.
• Confine dogs and cats before the crew arrives — front doors will be open for equipment.
• Plan a 3–6 hour out-of-house block for kids on medium-to-large jobs.
• Put valuables, electronics, and anything you don't want touched into a closed room.
• Clear a parking spot near the entry point closest to the work zone.
• Tell us up front about asthma, pregnancy, infants, or anyone immunocompromised so we can adjust the plan.

What "safe to be home" actually means

Being home during tile removal is a comfort call, not a safety call — assuming the crew is running true dust-controlled equipment with containment. If the crew shows up with a hammer, a shop vac, and no plastic, being home is not safe for anyone, and the whole household should leave. If they show up with HEPA-shrouded chippers, zip walls, and a negative air machine, the containment is doing its job — the question is just whether you and your family want to be around the noise.

Bottom line

For most DFW families with kids and pets: small jobs are stay-home jobs with a little planning; medium jobs are half-day-out jobs; whole- home removals are stay-elsewhere jobs.
