Homeowner Remodel Prep Checklist Before Flooring Removal

5 min read

A little prep before demo day saves time, keeps the home cleaner, and helps the next trade hit their start date. Use this checklist a few days before flooring removal in your DFW home.

1. Clear the work rooms

  • Furniture out of the rooms being demoed.
  • Lower cabinet contents emptied if cabinets are staying.
  • Rugs, mats, and floor decor removed.
  • Anything stored on the floor of closets in the work zone.

2. Protect valuables in adjacent rooms

  • Move photos, art, and breakables off shelves near the work zone.
  • Cover or move musical instruments, electronics, and anything sensitive.
  • Close interior doors on rooms you're not using during the workday.

With dust control in place, adjacent rooms stay clean — but for irreplaceable items, the extra step is worth it.

3. Talk through HVAC and vents

  • Note any HVAC returns in the work zone so we can plan around them. With source capture at the tool, the system usually keeps running normally.
  • Mention recently replaced units or sensitive systems so we can add extra protection where it's actually needed.
  • Mention household members with asthma, allergies, or respiratory sensitivities.

4. Confirm scope in writing

  • What rooms are included.
  • Whether baseboards stay, get pulled and reinstalled, or get scrapped.
  • Whether transitions, thresholds, and door sweeps are part of the job.
  • Whether toilets, vanities, or appliances need to be pulled (often a plumber's call).

5. Confirm thinset and substrate expectations

Make sure thinset removal is included if the next install is tile, hardwood, glue-down LVP, or polished concrete. "Tile demo only" without thinset removal almost always leaves your next installer with surprise prep work — and a surprise change order.

6. Plan access

  • Driveway and front walkway clear.
  • HOA, gate, or alley notes shared ahead of time.
  • Pets in a closed-off room or out of the house for the loud window.
  • Kids and naps planned around the loudest 2–4 hour middle stretch.

7. Coordinate with the next trade

The biggest scheduling win on a remodel is confirming the next installer can start the next morning. A clean, install-ready substrate is the whole point of doing demo this way — but only if the install crew is booked to capitalize on it.

8. Make sure communication is open

You should have a direct line to the crew owner or scheduler — not a generic call center. On a Dust Kingz job, that's us. Text us the day before to confirm arrival window and any last-minute adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early should I start prepping for floor removal?
A few days before is plenty for most homes. Whole-home jobs benefit from a week of prep so you're not moving furniture the morning of.
Do I need to move appliances and toilets myself?
Usually no — those are coordinated with a plumber or remodeler. We'll flag what needs to come out during the estimate and confirm who handles it.
Do I need to cover my own HVAC vents?
No. With source capture at the tool, dust is pulled off the bit before it has a chance to reach a return. We don't cover them as a default — only on the rare job that genuinely calls for it. Just point out any returns in the work zone at the walkthrough.
What if my next installer isn't booked yet?
It's fine to demo first, but try to keep the gap short. An empty substrate sitting for weeks invites scuffs, dust, and rescheduling pressure. We can help recommend trade partners if needed.
Can I add or change scope after the estimate?
Yes — within reason and with a quick written confirmation so there are no surprises on either side. Tell us as soon as you know.
